Oats aval dosa


Ingredients

2 cups beaten rice/poha/aval
1 cup oats
1/4 cup rice flour
Salt to taste
1/4 cup curds
1 green chilli finely chopped
Finely chopped coriander leaves
Oil to required

Soak the beaten rice in 2 cups water for 10 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients except oil and little more water as required for batter and keep aside for 10 minutes.

Heat tava and pour a ladle full of water to a medium thickness dosa. Spread few drops of oil around and allow to cook on medium flame till done. Slowly invert and cook on other side as well till cooked.


Serve hot with spicy chutney/sambar of your choice.

Oats moong halwa


Ingredients

1/2 cup oats (dry roast)
1/4 cup greengram dal soaked in water for 1 hour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
2 tbsp ghee
Almond sliced or roasted cashews

Grind the soaked dal to a smooth paste with little water. Powder the roasted oats and keep aside. Heat the ghee in a non stick pan and add the dal paste and cook well till the raw smell of the dal vanishes. Add a little milk in between if required. Now add the roasted oats powder and milk. Cook for 2 minutes and add sugar and cook till everything gets mixed well and thick.

Garnish with sliced almonds or roasted cashews.


Oats Vermicelli idli


Adapted from Mallika Badrinath's recipe in 100 Oats recipes book.

Ingredients

1.5 cups dry roasted oats
1 cup roasted vermicelli
2 cups thick curds beaten
Bit of cooking soda
2 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp blackgram dal
1 tsp bengalgram dal
Salt to taste
1 small onion finely chopped
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1 green chilli finely chopped
Few curry leaves
Optional : Finely chopped cabbage, carrot, boiled peas

Soak the vermicelli for 10 minutes in the curds. Add the oats to it and mix well. Let it stay for another 5 minutes. Heat oil and add mustard seeds. When it splutters, add blackgram dal, bengalgram dal, curry leaves, green chillies and ginger paste. Then add chopped onions and fry for a minute. Add this to the oats vermicelli mixture and add salt. Add water as required to make it a bit loose, but not watery.

Grease idli plates with little oil and put this batter in each hole. Steam for 10 minutes till a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the idli.

Serve hot with chutney/sambar of your choice.

Oats Vermicelli dosa


Ingredients

1.5 cups dry roasted oats
1 cup roasted vermicelli
2 tbsp rice flour
2 cups thick curds beaten
Salt to taste
1 small onion finely chopped
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1 green chilli finely chopped
Few curry leaves
Finely chopped coriander leaves
Oil as required
Optional : Finely chopped cabbage, carrot
Mix all the ingredients except oil and add around 1/2 cup of water. Let it stay for about 15 minutes. If required add more water, but the batter should not watery.

Heat tava and pour a ladle full of batter and spread slightly to make a dosa. Sprinkle few drops of oil in the sides and allow it to cook. When it browns on the lower side, slowly flip and cook on other side as well till brown spots appear.
Serve hot with chutney/sambar of your choice.

Oats Akkaravadisal

Ingredients

1 cup oats
1/4 cup green gram dal (moong dal)
1 cup grated jaggery
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
3 tbsp ghee
Cashews and raisins
Pinch of edible camphor (pachaai karpooram)

Heat 2 tbsp ghee and roast the oats well. Add 3 cups of water and cook it. Keep seperately. Pressure cook the dal seperately till soft. Heat the jaggery with little water and after it melts, strain it to remove the impurities. Heat it again and allow it to get thick. Add the dal and cooked oats to it and mix well. Cook on low flame for few minutes so that the jaggery taste gets mixed well.

Roast the cashews in the remaining ghee and add it along with cardamom powder and edible camphor. Mix well. Switch off the gas and allow it to cool a little. Finally add the boiled milk and mix well. Ensure that you add it when it is in room temperature or else it will curdle.

Oats kesari

Ingredients

1 cup oats 
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
3 tbsp ghee
Few cashews and raisins
Pinch of red orange colour

Heat 2 tbsp of ghee and roast the oats well. Keep aside and heat the rest of the ghee. Add cashews and roast till golden brown. Add 2 1/2 cups of water and allow it to boil. Add the roasted oats and cook well. Add sugar and mix well. When it starts getting thick add the cardamom powder and the red orange colour. Mix well..Add raisins and mix again.

Serve hot.

Oats sakkarai pongal

Ingredients

1 cup oats
1/4 cup green gram dal (Moong dal)(pressure cooked)
1 cup grated jaggery (adjust as per taste)
Few cashews
Raisins
2 tbsp ghee
1/4 tsp cardamom powder

Heat 1 tbsp ghee and roast the oats for 2-3 mins till you get a good smell. Keep aside.

Masala oats pancake




This recipe is adapted from Nita Mehta's Oats breakfast recipes book with minor changes.

Ingredients

1 cup oats (grind to coarse powder)
Salt to taste
1 each of tomato, onion, green chilli chopped finely
1 tsp kasoori methi crushed
Finely chopped coriander leaves
Red chilli to taste
1/2 tsp garam masala powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 1/2 cups of water
Oil

Mix all the ingredients except oil. Spread 1 tsp oil in a tava and heat it. Take it off the fire and spread the batter gently to get a pancake. Now heat it and add little more oil. Cook till it gets brown and then slowly turn it and cook on the second side.

Repeat for rest of the batter. Serve hot with chutney/ tomato sauce.

Onion oats dosa




A simple, healthy and quick breakfast recipe..No fermentation required for dosa

Ingredients

1 cup powdered oats
1/4 cup blackgram dal flour (urad atta)
Salt to taste
2 onions finely chopped
Oil

Make a batter of oats, blackgram dal flour and salt of pouring consistency.

Heat tava, spread the batter into a dosa and spread few drops of oil in the corners. Spread some chopped onions on the dosa and press it well. When the lower side of the dosa is cooked, slowly turn it over and cook on other side as well.

Serve hot with some spicy chutney/sambar.

Oats vadai


Ingredients

1 cup blackgram dal (soaked for 2 hrs)
Salt to taste
1 tsp pepper powder
1 cup oats
Oil to fry

Dry roast the oats and powder it. Grind the soaked dal without water or very less water till smooth. Add salt, pepper powder and powdered oats to it.

Make vadas and fry in hot oil till golden brown and crisp.

Serve hot with chutney/sambar.

Oats chutney


Ingredients

1 cup roasted oats
1/4 cup grated coconut
Salt to taste
2 red chillies
Bit of asafoetida
To temper
1 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp blackgram dal
Few curry leaves
1 red chilli cut into pcs

Powder the roasted oats first seperately and then grind it with other ingredients adding water as required to get a smooth consistency.

Temper with mustard seeds, blackgram dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves and red chillies.

Oats ladoo


Ingredients

1 cup roasted and powdered oats
1 cup roasted fine rava
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 tsp cardamom powder
Few roasted nuts and raisins
Ghee as required (1/4 to 1/2 cup)

Mix all the ingredients and add ghee as required to make ladoos.

Healthy and tasty ladoos ready.

Oats rava idli



A healthy idli variety that tastes almost similar to rava idlis..

Ingredients

2 cups of roasted and powdered oats
1 cup of roasted rava
Salt to taste
2 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp bengalgram dal
1 tsp blackgram dal
1/2 tsp ginger paste
2 finely chopped green chillies
Few broken cashews
Finely chopped coriander leaves
Few curry leaves
1 cup curd
Water as required

Heat oil, add mustard seeds, bengalgram dal, blackgram dal, cashews and roast till it splutters. Add it to the oats powder. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. The consistency should be similar to rava idli batter consistency.


Pour them into greased idli plates and steam them for 8-10 minutes. Insert a knife and check if it comes out clean. Cool for a minute and transfer to a serving plate. Serve with chutney/sambar.

Oats Paniyaram



Ingredients

1 cup oats
1/2 cup rice flour
2 tbsp roasted rava
1/4 cup curds
Salt to taste
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/2 tsp green chilli sauce
Finely chopped coriander leaves
2 tsp oil

Make a batter (consistency that of dosa batter) of all the ingredients except oil and keep covered for 10 minutes.

Add a drop of oil in each hole of the paniyaram pan and pour the batter in it. Cook till it is crisp and done. Turn and cook on other side as well with a drop of oil.

Serve hot with chutney of your choice.

Oats Paratha


Recipe source: Sumathi's version at Chutney's with some changes to suit our tastes.

Ingredients

1 cup powdered oats
2 cups wheat flour
Salt to taste
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/2 tsp green chilli sauce
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup chopped spinach
Finely chopped coriander leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp garam masala powder
Bit of amchur powder
Oil/ghee
Milk

Make a soft dough of all the ingredients except oil. Keep covered for 10 minutes. Make small balls of it.

Roll out into thick parathas and cook on hot tava with some oil and ghee till brown spots appear on both sides.

Serve hot.

Oats Vadai


Ingredients

1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup red gram dal
1/2 cup bengalgram dal
2 red chillies
Salt to taste
1 tsp ginger paste
Finely chopped coriander leaves
Few curry leaves
Oil to fry

Soak the dals for 1 hour. Grind it along with the red chillies and oatmeal. Add salt, ginger paste, curry leaves and coriander leaves and mix well.

Make vadas and fry them in hot oil till light brown.

Serve hot with chutney/sambar.

Oats Halwa


Ingredients

1 1/2 cups powdered oats
1/2 cup milk powder (Check Sumathy's version for burfi with condensed milk)
1/2 cup sugar (add more according to your taste)
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
Few roasted nuts
3 tbsp ghee
1/2 cup water

Melt the ghee and add the powdered oats to it. Keep cooking it till you start getting a nice aroma. Add the milk powder, sugar, water, cardamom powder and nuts to it and mix well. Cook till all of them gets mixed well and forms a single lump. Add more ghee if required.

Transfer it to a greased plate and cool for 10 minutes. Cut into pieces of required sizes.

Ragi Oatmeal Soya Dosa




Archana of Archana's Kitchen posted this healthy and instant dosa variety idea some time back. It was soft as well as tasty.

Ingredients

1/4 cup of ragi flour, oats and rice flour each
2 tbsp soya flour
Salt to taste
Green chillies (I used green chilli sauce instead)
1/2 tsp pepper powder
1/2 cup curd
Finely chopped coriander leaves
Oil

Mix all the ingredients except oil with sufficient water to get a batter slightly thinner than the normal one. Let it stay covered for atleast 15 minutes.

Heat tava and spread a ladle of the batter all over..It would look like rava dosa. Spread some oil and when it gets cooked, turn over and cook on the other side as well.

Serve hot.

Oats Rava Payasam


Thanks Seena of Simple and Delicious blog for the new payasam idea..

Ingredients (Translation)

2 tbsp oats
2 tbsp rava
4 tbsp sugar
Nuts
2 tbsp ghee
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp cardamom powder

Roast the nuts in ghee, add oats and rava. Roast till the colour starts changing and then add half the milk. Add sugar, cardamom powder and cook till done.

Add the rest of the milk and serve hot or cold.

Oats Dosa

After seeing Archana's Oatmeal dosa, i was tempted to try it out and here is my little modified version of another instant dosa variety.



Ingredients (Translation)

1 cup oats
1/4 cup rava/sooji
1/4 cup rice flour
2 cups water
2 green chillies cut finely
Finely chopped coriander leaves
Salt to taste
Oil

Mix all ingredients except oil and let it stay covered for 15 minutes.

Heat tava and add a laddle full of batter to it and spread in circular way. Spread out a little oil in the sides.

When one side is cooked, turn it and cook on other side as well.

Serve hot with chutney or sambar.
